The Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington received a commitment of support from the Texas Rangers Foundation and pitcher Kevin Millwood to construct a youth baseball field in one of Arlington’s oldest and fragile neighborhoods.

The Kevin Millwood Texas Rangers Ballpark will be constructed at 2011 Wynn Terrace.  It will be part of the National Semiconductor Sports Complex that will include multi-use soccer and flag football fields.  The park will allow for further expansion of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington’s youth baseball leagues which will teach youth team building and game fundamentals.

“Kevin Millwood and the Texas Rangers Foundation have made a significant investment to improve the lives of more than 6,000 at-risk children,” said Steve A. Wurm, president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington.  “Teaching our members about responsible behavior and decision making through the game of baseball is a wonderful thing.”

Since 1997 Major League Baseball has designated the Boys & Girls Clubs of America as its official charity, and has given countless children the chance to realize their dreams both on and off the field. The RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) has created baseball and softball leagues in over 200 communities worldwide.

The National Semiconductor Sports Complex is the result of a partnership between the Boys & Girls Clubs and the City of Arlington.  The east side, city owned land is leased to the Boys & Girls Clubs so it may expand family sports, leisure, and recreation activities in a neighborhood in need of revitalization.  This partnership is one of several outlined in an application the city has made for federal Weed & Seed funds.   Weed and Seed aims to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in designated high-crime neighborhoods across the country.

Last year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington received a grant from the National Semiconductor Foundation to construct the athletic complex.  The grant allows for field preparation, irrigation, and beautification. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington will be responsible for operating and maintaining the complex.

Construction on the Kevin Millwood Texas Rangers Ballpark and the National Semiconductor Sports Complex is expected to be completed in early summer.
